IASBet – Rugby League World Cup

Posted by Trix @ 12:00 AM, Thursday Nov 27th, 2008

www.iasbet.com.au – Australia has cemented a spot in the Rugby League World Cup with an ominous 52-0 thrashing of Fiji in Sydney last night.

The Fijians hoped to make a game of it but a knock-on just two tackles into their opening set destroyed any confidence they had and any chance of threatening the Kangaroos.

Billy Slater continued his run of outstanding form crossing for three tries, taking his series total to seven.

Halfback Jonathon Thurstons proved once again why he is in the green and gold and rated as one of the top halfbacks playing the game.

Thurstons was commanding in his performance and crossed for three tries in the space of just ten minutes to stamp his authority on a very lopsided game of Rugby League.

The Fijians did rally after the break with some stinging defense and creative ball movement but were unable to post any points.

They did, however, keep the Australian to just one try in a thirty minute period but the significant damage had been done early and there was no way of pegging back the deficit.

Winger Brent Tate scored a double in the first 15 minutes but his jubilation was short lived after he was forced from the field with a hip flexor injury and is now in danger of missing the final against the Kiwis.

The Australian should be very short priced favourites to take out the decider given their hugely impressive wins over New Zealand England earlier I the competition.

Iasbet.com.au – RLIF Inaugural Player

www.iasbet.com.au – Billy Slater has taken the highest honour in International Rugby League by being named the Rugby League International Federation’s inaugural player of the year last night.

A jubilant Slater could hardly contain his excitement in year that without a doubt, he claims, has been the best year of his life.

Despite losing a second Grand Final in three years, Slater played a starring role in the State of Origin , displayed some of the most consistent club level form in the NRL and most importantly, became the proud father of a baby boy.

Slater has often been regarded as one of those player’s fans either love or hate with his cheeky attitude, lightening turn of foot and incredible ball skills.

However, although he missed out on the Dally M due to suspension, he is now the undisputed best player in the world and that is something be respected regardless of personal opinion.

Australian players made up the bulk of the International Team of the Year with just one kiwi in the run on squad and a handful of poms.

Premiership winning Manly Coach Des Hasler took out International Coach of the Year in just his third season coaching the maroon and whites from the Northern beaches.

Isreal Folau added to his growing list of accolades by making the starting line up after being named rookie of the year and becoming the youngest ever to play for Australia, scoring two tries in a dream debut against New Zealand earlier this year.

Past Three Head-to-Head
South Dragons 114-119 Adelaide 36ers, Round 15 2007.
Adelaide 36ers 96-93 South Dragons, Round 9 2007.
South Dragons 149-147 Adelaide 36ers, Round 21 2007.

Season Series
First match

Current Standings
Dragons 9-2 (first), 36ers 4-6 (seventh)

The Dragons will enter this clash as heavy favourites and rightly so considering they sit atop the NBL ladder after winning their last seven matches while Adelaide will be desperate for a win after their heartbreaking one-point loss to Cairns at home last Saturday night.

The 36ers managed a meagre 70 points against the Taipans and they will need to be more productive on the offensive end on Wednesday night if they are going to keep pace with a South Dragons outfit that boasts multiple scoring options.

Once again it is in-form big men Adam Ballinger and Luke Schenscher that are the keys for Adelaide – they need to have big games if the 36ers are going to cause an upset.

The 36ers are expected to be bolstered by the return of guards Brad Davidson and Brett Maher and they will play an important role with the Dragons likely to plug the key way and force Adelaide to punish them from the outside.

If the likes of Davidson and Maher can knock down their shots from long range then the 36ers are a genuine chance to record their fifth win of the season.

The ladder leaders are still without centre Nick Horvath, who is sidelined with a wrist injury, but everyone else at the Dragons is fit and firing.

Brian Goorjan’s men have played as a team so far this season and this was perfectly summed up in the 12-point win over the Gold Coast Blaze at Hisense Stadium last Saturday night.

While Mark Worthington top-scored for the Dragons with 18 points, five of his team-mates also scored in double figures, with import Cortez Groves (16) and Rhys Carter, Matt Burston, Adam Gibson and Joe Ingles all contributing 11.

The last three matches between these two sides have been won by the home side – expect the trend to continue with the Dragons having too many scoring options for the 36ers.

The Dragons scoring options and impressive defence should see them record a relatively comfortable win at home.

With this in mind my money is on a Dragons’ win by 11+, offering $2.00.

lasseters.com.au – Cairns Taipans vs New Zealand Breakers

Past Three Head-to-Head
Cairns Taipans 101-92 New Zealand Breakers, Round 6 2008.
New Zealand Breakers 111-122 Cairns Taipans, Round 4 2008.
Cairns Taipans 78-100 New Zealand Breakers, Quarter finals 2008.

Season Series
Taipans 2-0

Current Standings
Taipans 6-5 (fourth), Breakers 8-3 (second)

The Cairns Taipans started a hectic November schedule in perfect fashion, winning a thrilling contest against the Adelaide 36ers by one point last Saturday night while the Breakers consolidated their place in the top two with a hard-fought two point win over the Melbourne Tigers.

Despite occupying second place on the NBL ladder the Breakers will go into this match as underdogs given the fact that the Taipans have won the previous two matches between these two sides this season.

It was an 11-point margin in favour of the Taipans in round four and then nine points in the rematch in round six.

Veteran point-guard Darnell Mee was the chief destroyer in round four with 26 points.

Mee has managed a meagre four points in his past two matches and the Taipans will need him to lift and be more productive on the offensive end while the likes of Martin Cattalini, Ian Crosswhite and Dave Thomas will also need to be solid contributors to offset the absence of guard Stephen Black.

The Breakers are one of the form teams of the competition having won four of their past five and will head to the Snakepit with plenty of confidence considering they won there during last year’s finals series.

The battle in the backcourt shapes as being the key in determining the outcome of this match.

Kirk Penney is in stellar form and was instrumental in his side’s win over the Tigers with a game-high 25 points while CJ Bruton has run the show superbly since joining the club from the Brisbane Bullets.

New Zealand appears to have the edge in terms of class and scoring power in the backcourt with Mee down on form and confidence and Black sidelined indefinitely with a back injury.

In what shapes as being a close contest New Zealand’s more potent backcourt should get it over the line.

This punter recommends putting money on a Breakers’ win by 1-10, offering a healthy $3.00.

Melbourne Tigers vs New Zealand Breakers

Where and When: Saturday 8 November, State Netball and Hockey Centre, 7.30pm (AEST)

Past Three Head-to-Head
New Zealand Breakers 120-111 Melbourne Tigers, Round 2 2008.
New Zealand Breakers 105-91 Melbourne Tigers, Round 21 2008.
Melbourne Tigers 112-98 New Zealand Breakers, Round 18 2008.

Season Series
Breakers 1-0

Current Standings
Tigers 7-3 (third), Breakers 7-3 (second)

On paper this shapes as being the match of the round with both sides on seven wins.

New Zealand’s form has been scratchy of late – they got out of jail against Perth and gave the Adelaide 36ers their first road win for the season in round eight while Melbourne have won their past three and are starting to hit top form after an indifferent start to the season.

The Tigers will be keen to make it four straight on Saturday night and level the season series at one-all.

With both sides expected to be near the top of the ladder at the end of the regular season a loss here could have major ramifications come playoff time.

The last time these two sides met in round two New Zealand hit a staggering 20 three-pointers on their way to a nine-point victory.

The Breakers won’t be allowed the same freedom beyond the arc this time around and with doubts over the fitness over guard CJ Bruton, who was a late withdrawal from the match against the 36ers due to a back complaint, New Zealand’s potency is severely diminished.

The onus will now be on guard Kirk Penney to have a big game to inspire his side to victory while the Tigers boast several players that are capable of posting big numbers.

Chris Anstey was his side’s best with a game-high 32 points when these two sides met earlier in the season, Ebi Ere is dangerous on the offensive end while Sam MacKinnon has returned to some of his best form in the last couple of weeks.

Two of the past three clashes between these two sides have been decided by 10 points or more and with doubts over the availability of Bruton my money is on a Tigers’ win by 11+, offering $2.00.
