The two athletes are expected to make a full recovery from their injuries and will no doubt have a very interesting tale to tell upon their return home.
Acting director of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Phil Borgeud praised staff and elder members for their quick thinking in avoiding what could potentially have been a tragic and devastating disaster.
The team had been travelling exceptionally well just a week into the three week tour, winning their opening first two games in the Italian leg of the tour.
Despite losing the vast majority of their equipment and uniforms, the team will continue its tour, playing another four games in Sweden over the next week before continuing onto Slovakia to play another five games.
It is expected that the near tragedy will have little impact on the team’s performance in the coming weeks.

The Jets will join last year’s minor premier’s, the Central Coast Mariners in the Asian Champions league despite a lack of form from both teams – the Mariner’s finished fourth in the A-League’s most recent season.
This season’s top teams have every right to be aggrieved as the Asian Champions League is one of the more lucrative competitions on the Football Calender.
A Spokesperson for Football Federation Australia stated that it was extremely unlikely that the current system for qualifying for the Asian Champion’s League.
It is apparent that fixtures need to be set in stone early and it is not feasible to wait til the end of the season to try and organise pool matches.

Nobody expected United to feature but they held their heads high after being narrowly defeated in the final.

The mercury is set to top 35 for the third day running but it has not deterred record numbers of cycling enthusiast from turning up to witness the spectacle that is Lance Armstrong.
Armstrong finished well back in the field in the Tour’s prequel but was not the least bit disappointed with his performance.
It has been a long road back for the undisputed greatest cyclist that has ever mounted a bike and he is happy just to be riding again and raising awareness for his charity – Livestrong – which is dedicated to raising awareness for all forms of cancer.
True to form, the media contingent was more than double the previous numbers at any Tour Downunder, giving Armstrong the perfect platform to re-launch his career in the name of cancer awareness.
Many riders would have cracked the champagne when Armstrong retired after dominating a sport like no other individual has dominated in recent history.

Coming into the Philadelphia Vs Giants match that set up the show down, the New York Giants were seeded number one and bookmakers had them installed as red hot favourites to take out yet another Super Bowl.
However the Eagles had other ideas for Giants, running out 23 – 11 victors in a narrow game that saw star Quarterback Donovan McNabb find the in zone first with a decisive run and then with a spectacular snap pass.
The Cardinal enjoyed a surprise 33 – 11 thrashing of the Panthers to see them just one game away from the big one.

Either way Australia can be proud as one man makes history to take the field in Super Bowl 2009.
