Australia’s NRL is in the midst of a = row over the league’s salary cap after chief executive David Gallop maintained it was fundamental to the sport.
Gallop was defending the contraversial measure ahead of a legal challenge by the Bulldogs’ Sonny Bill Williams. The former All Black is trying to get released from his five-year contract with the Bulldogs in order to join French Rugby Union Club Toulon is a big money transfer.
The basis of the Second Row’s argument is that the NRL’s salary cap amounts to ‘restraint of trade’ and therefore he should be free to pursue his career, for more money, elsewhere.
If the challenge is successful it will turn the League on it’s head with players demanding more money knowing they can get it abroad.
Meanwhile as the season nears it’s end the Melbourne Storm are favourites with the bookies to claim the grand final currently best price 6/4. Last year’s champions are currently second in the table but with a game in hand and until last week have been the form team.
The second favourites, The Sea Eagles, are being well backed and are odds-on to win the regular season. Backers are hoping they can take confidence from that and bring it into the post season.
At a bigger price the Dragons are receiving a lot of interest. Winners over the Bulldogs in their last match they recently put together seven wins on the bounce and a return to that form could see them as surprise winners..
