Bird has led Australia to victory in previous test matches, most notably a record win over New Zealand last year in Lockyer’s absence and all eyes are on the Cronulla great to see if this feat can be matched in the Centenary Test this year.

Melbourne Storm’s Michael Crocker was called back into the team last night to play in the back row with Bird moving to the number 6 and Anthony Laffranchi joining the aussie squad as the 18th man.

Greg Bird has said he will “step up” after taking over the role of the player he personally rates as “the best in the world”.
