www.centrebet.com.au – Melbourne has suffered yet another blow to its attempt to make four straight National Rugby League Grand Finals after Super 14’s team the Queensland Reds snared young back Will Chambers in a reportedly lucrative deal.
The twenty year old Chambers had been touted as the replacement for the barnstorming Israel Folau (who has signed a contract to play with the Brisbane Broncos) but the Melbourne Storm reportedly could not match the amount of money offered by the Reds.
Chambers, who played the first ten games of the season of the season for the Storm last year before a knee injury saw him sidelined for the remainder of the season, comes from a Rugby Union background and is said to have all the hallmarks of a quality outside back.
The boy from the Northern Territory went to school at Brisbane’s Nudgee College and actually represented Queensland alongside Wallaby Quade Cooper in 2006.
Chambers has allegedly harboured a desire to return to the code on which he was raised and will don the marron jersey when the Super 14’s competition kicks off this year after signing a two year deal.
Craig Bellamy will be forced to field a side that includes stars that have not had the best preparation ahead of the sided warm up match against Newcastle on Saturday night.
Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Greg Inglis are all expected to take the field despite the fact that rumours have suggested they are ‘underdone’.
Five other first grade and regular starters are still under injury clouds just a month out from the season opener against St George.
Some of the players could miss all three trial matches meaning that they will head into the round one clash without any pre season game time. Centrebet.com.au
