Despite only leading by just eight points (14 – 6) at half time, the Australian put on three tries in the second half to sound a warning to other countries competing this year – particularly Great Britain who will take on Australia next Sunday.

Star half-back Jonathon Thurstons was very much in doubt for the World Cup opener after a family tragedy on the eve of the game.

An emotional Thurstons starred in an error free performance that saw him set up three tries and nail 4/5 goal attempts with the boot and was awarded man of the match by channel nine following the game.

The halves combination of Thurstons and Lockyer had not played together since origin three in 2007 but steered their troops around the park masterfully.

Despite their lack of preparation, the Kangaroos looked like the well-oiled machine we have come to expect in international competition.

Thurstons and Lockyer looked very polished as the combined superbly with the Melbourne combination of Billy Slater (1 try), Israel Falau (2 Tries) and Greg Inglis (1 Try).

Canberra’s Joel Monaghan also crossed in the first half for a try on debut.

Despite an arduous season and five-week lay-off for many of the players, the Kangaroos look ominous for the rest of the World Cup.
