www.lassesters.com.au – Ford’s Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup scored their third straight Bathurst 1000 victory on Sunday, equalling Peter Brock’s record set nearly thirty years ago.
An emotional Lowndes thanked fans as he and Whincup took the podium.
In a race where Holdens were the more fancied option, Lowndes and Wincup navigated their way from fifth to first very early in the piece and never looked back.
Holden Commodore did however sneak home for a hard faught second place to Greg Murphy and Jason Richards.
After a horror start for commodore that saw two cars involved in a collision on lap one, the Ford pairing surged to the front and it was all the rest of the field could do to finish the gruelling race.
Veteran racer Lowndes praised his co-driver Whincup referring to him as a ‘whizz kid’ as they accepted the trophy.
The champagne following one of the least controversial Bathurst 1000’s in recent history.
Aside from the incident on the first lap, nearly 200,000 fans were treated to a nearly clinical display of endurance driving from the best drivers in the country.
The only real incident that marred a near perfect day for event organisers was what looked like a minor incident in which Paul Radisich actually broke both his ankles.
He was treated at the scene of the warm up crash before being taken to hospital for treatment.
In a golden patch for Ford that according to fans has been ‘long overdue’, they now move to a commanding lead in the overall ranking despite solid years from the likes of Murphy, Richards and Kelly.
