In an absorbing clash, Dokic dropped the second set only to sweep aside the Austrian and claim her first victory in an Australian open in more than five years.

After the match, Dokic broke down at a press conference with an outpouring of emotion surrounding her nearly four year exodus from the sport she loves, from the country she loves, and her almost total estrangement from her family.

Weeping, Dokic stated openly that not only had she been to hell and back with the controversies surrounding her and her father’s off field drams, but had battled sever depression for almost two years following the split with her family.

The depression meant that she played little or no tennis for around four years.

Dokic once carried the hopes of Australian women’s tennis after reaching the semi finals of Wimbledon as a teen prodigy in 2000 but the off field antics of her father Demir made it almost impossible for her to concentrate on playing the game she loved.

After struggling through the wild card qualifying tournament earlier in January, the weight of relief was clear as Dokic managed just a few humble sentences before breaking down in tears.

She also stated that she is yet to play her best tennis and that now the weight of failure, the thought of never playing tennis again and the many obstacles she has encountered are behind her – she is ready to regain her place on the women’s circuit as a force to be reckoned with.
